Submissions

Author Guidelines

Contributions are peer-reviewed by an international editorial board and referees, and normally published within two weeks after acceptance. There are no page charges for the open access of the manuscript which will be published only in electronic form.

Original papers and review

These should not exceed 15 manuscript pages including references (approximately 45000 characters) and no more than 8 non-text elements (Tables or Figures). There is no restriction on the amount of supporting information but these have to be submitted as a single DOCX file including all supplementary figures and tables with their captions.

 

Short notes

These should not exceed 5 manuscript pages including references (approximately 15000 characters) plus 4 non-text elements (Tables or Figures). There is no restriction on the amount of supporting information but these that have to be submitted as a single Word file including all supplementary figures and tables with their captions.

 

Book reviews, conference reports and other types of contributions

These should not exceed 1 manuscript page including max one non-text element and a small number of essential references. These contributions will be published in the section news.

Submission

Please register yourself and login and then follow the hyperlink “New submission” on the right of “Author”. Then choose the appropriate section for your submission and upload your manuscript file and, if any, the supplementary materials following the instructions given on the screen. Authorship should be restricted to those who have significantly contributed in some way to the work.

Publication Rules

Language. IJM only publishes papers in English. All non-native English authors are encouraged to use language editing and copyediting services. Manuscripts that do not meet IJM’s language standards may be rejected at any phase of the editorial process.

Format. Manuscripts should be submitted in DOCX format (Word 2007 or higher); Font: Times New Roman; Size: 12 pt. Italics should only be used for species/genera names and genes. Non-English terms can be emphasized by double inverted commas (“ ”). The automatic page numbering function should be used to number the pages. Automatic continuous line numbering is requested throughout the manuscript until the end of reviewing process (do not restart the numbering on each page). Manuscript text should be single spaced without using multiple columns.

Page setup: A4 format, margins: top 2.3 cm; bottom 1 cm; left 2 cm; right 2 cm.

Nomenclature: use SI units; provide the Recommended International Non-Proprietary Name (rINN) for drugs; species names must be in italics writing out in full the genus in the title, at the first mention in the text and at the beginning of a sentence. In all other instances, the first letter of a genus name must be followed by the full species name. Add Authorities only after the first mention of the full genus and species of an organism.

Manuscript organization (please refer to our downloadable sample files)

Original articles should contain a title page in English (including the title of the manuscript, name(s) and address(es) of Author(s), corresponding author (e-mail), abstract, keywords) followed by: Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusions (optional), Acknowledgments, References, Supporting information captions (if applicable). Results and Discussion sections can be merged but, in this case, a conclusion section is needed. Short notes should include only a merged section of result discussion and conclusion. Reviews should contain title page in English [including the title of the manuscript, name(s) and address(es) of Author(s), corresponding author (e-mail), abstract, keywords] followed by: Introduction and other sections and subsections, Conclusion, Acknowledgments, References.

The Title has to be concise and informative and not longer than 200 characters (character: 18-pt, bold, justified, single spaced). Avoid abbreviations and Authorities in the title.

Author information: first name(s), initial of the second name, family name (character: 12-pt, bold, centered, single spaced); affiliation(s) and address(es), e-mail address of the corresponding author cited as follow: Corresponding author e-mail: mario.rossi@unibo.it (character: 10-pt, normal, justified, single-spaced)

Abstracts must be less than 200 words and must fully convey the content of the work. It should not contain any abbreviations, references or Authorities (character: 10-pt, normal, justified, single-spaced)

Keywords 5 to 7, which are not included in the title (character: 10-pt, normal, justified, single-spaced)

Text (character size: 12-pt, Times New Romans)

Do not use more than two levels of section and subsections: the first level in bold (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgments, References) and the second level in italic.

Minimize the use of abbreviations (terms appearing at least three time in the text); define them upon first appearance in the text and use them consistently thereafter.

Indent each paragraph by 1 cm, with the exception of the first paragraph after each heading and sub-heading. Do not use space bar for indents; do not add footnotes or endnotes, include all information into the main text or reference list.

Use the equation editor or MathType for display and inline equations (it is not permitted a mix of different equation tools); do not use them to insert single variable, Greek symbols or mathematical signs in the running text.

Add symbols using the “insert symbol function” available in your word processor.

Acknowledgments (character size: 10-pt): acknowledgments of people, grants, funding organizations, etc. should be written in full.

Tables and figures should be cited (Table 1, Fig. 1a,b) and included in the text and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. The location of Tables and Figures within the text is under the responsibility of the authors both before and after the reviewing process. Editorial manager retains the right to make small changes for enhancing text formatting. Tables and figures have to fit in the column width. Each table and figure should have a descriptive, concise and self-explanatory caption, preceded by the terms “Table” or “Fig.” in bold and followed by a number and a hyphen also in bold. No punctuation marks are to be placed at the end of the captions.

Format tables with Word's Table function; do not use tabs or spaces to create a table. All tables (including captions, table entries and, if any, footnotes) should be clearly distinguished from the main text by reducing the font size to 10 pt (please consult the model text file) and separated by at least one line from the text above and below. Do not include vertical lines and keep horizontal lines to the minimum to distinguish the column headings. Figures should fit within that area allowing space for the legend. A minimum resolution of 1200 dpi and 300 dpi is required for Line Art (black and with graphics) and Halftone Art (photograph, drawing, etc.), respectively. Colour figures are welcome. If any magnification is used, a scale bar embedded in the figure itself is required. In the text, sub-figures should be identified by lowercase letters (a, b, c, etc) while Arial font (size 8–14 pt consistently with the image dimensions) should be used for figure lettering.

If figures published elsewhere have to be included in the manuscript, authors must obtain permission from the copyright owner. Any material received without such permission will be assumed to be original. IJM publisher will not refund any costs the copyright owner might require to receive these permissions.

References

References in the text

Cite references by Author name(s) and date of publication (in parentheses) using “et al.” when there are more than two authors. References should be listed chronologically and then alphabetically as in the following examples:

References in the reference list

Only the works cited in the text that have been published or accepted for publication must be included in the list. Other type of references should only be cited in the text as (Alessandra Zambonelli, personal communication) or (unpublished data). The works should be listed in alphabetical order or chronologically in the case of publications with exactly the same order names, without numbering and should contain: all Authors' surnames followed by their abbreviated first name(s), year between round brackets, title of the paper, full name of the Journal, number of the volume and issue, initial and final page numbers, doi with the hyperlink (if available). Books should be cited as: Author(s), year, title, edition, publisher and city, doi (if available).

Note: the citation of the DOI number (if available) is encouraged in addition to traditional volume and page numbers. Cite DOI as in the example above without providing a shortened version or URL.

Supplementary materials should be submitted as a single docx file containing any supplementary information such as supplementary figures and tables and the corresponding captions. Any supplementary material has to be numbered consecutively (as Fig. S1, Fig. S2 or Table S1, Table S2, etc.) and cited in the text. Supplementary materials should be self-explanatory. 

Alternatively, supplemental data can be archived in public data repositories.
